There’s a new Twitter login page slowly rolling out today! The page is much more useful by including a list to the left that includes a group of users who are using the service (whom you can follow if you choose – it would be nice if they add a follow button to the hover effect on these icons though) and a center auto-scrolling list that shows the top tweets real-time (stream comes from the twitter account “toptweets”). The page still includes a scrolling marquee indicating the latest trending topics but they’ve added a unique hover that allows you to read a little about the topics – great UI and very useful!

The page is still being added to but so far, I think the home page is going in a great direction because it makes it easier for users to explore and find new interesting people to follow!

So after Seesmic rolled out with some new features and being named the “new” twirl it seems like Tweetdeck wanted to up it’s mark and come out with an unscheduled update!

The update came out yesterday and it fixes a number of bugs and adds a few new features including: Facebook integration, a Digg URL shortener, support for Spotify URLs, previewing of TwitPic images inside the app and preview of information about short URLs within the application before opening the link, and 12 second video integration, which allows you to record and share short videos directly from TweetDeck.

Now, I was really excited when TweetDeck rolled out these updates yesterday – minus one un-needed update.

They icon. Who stole the real Black Bird? This new one is definitely an impostor!

The new TweetDeck icon is now a horrible joke of a black bird atop a yellow box. Where did this come from!?

The dreadful icon can be viewed below:

I’m sorry that you had to see that. Oh wait, you have to view it every time your use tweetdeck. AHHHHHH!!!!!

Don’t worry after I finished crying I figured out a way to never see that dreadful icon in my dock again!

Lets clear up a few things before we get on to the good stuff. If the original icon didn’t exist and this was the icon they started off with from the beginning, I don’t think it would be such a big deal.

But, when you compare this new one to the original one, which was filled with edginess, spunk and depth, it seems almost like a pitiful downgrade. I’m all up for change but this change was definitely the wrong one!

It would have been awesome if they would have just used this one as the update.

I know that a lot of people have been complaining about TweetDeck’s new icon. That’s why, from the moment I was shocked with the change, I knew I had to find a way to get the old Black Bird – with all its edginess and spunk – back!

So I figured it out and now I’m sharing

How to change your TweetDeck Icon to it’s original state of glory (this tutorial covers all steps and can be applied to changing other application icons on your mac also):

Before you get started:

• Download Img2icns, super easy to use drag and drop app that changes any image into a compatible .icns file for using as app icons.
• Download a Trial of Candybar, an awesome tool that allows you to change the Leopard icons you can’t.
• Right click either of the images below that you’d like to use as your TweetDeck icon and save it to your desktop.

1. Launch Img2icns and simply drag and drop the image you choose onto the app.

2. Select ICNS & Save the file to your desktop.

3. Quit Img2icns & Launch the Candybar application.

4. Select the icon that allows you to “Change Application Icons”

5. Next, Find TweetDeck in the list of Applications:

6. Click Apply Icons and Your all finished!

Maybe if enough people complain/switch back to the original TweetDeck icon they will see that the icon change wasn’t such a good idea.

Comment if you change back and we’ll use the comment list as a petition to bring the real “Black Bird” back!
